Hacking Rhetoric

Joshua Bennett – Blue Team #2

Hacker culture has come a long way. I think my first introduction (and maybe many people’s) to hackers was the Matrix. The movie seemed like a fight between hackers. The main hero was the ultimate hacker who could by pass the system, the one. I loved the Matrix, but it still stereotyped hackers. Many of the hackers were big dudes sitting behind computers in run down places with no social skills and a lack of basic hygiene. Still, it was interesting to see the hacker become the hero.

As a gamer, it’s happening again with the game Watch Dogs. In this game you are a hacker vigilante. I think the fact that the character is a vigilante perfectly describes how we feel about hackers right now. Groups like Anonymous are seen as doing things that are breaking the law, but they do it for the public interest of us all. It’s like Batman. People want a solution for the problems of security and privacy we have, but still don’t give enough attention to it. It’s not until someone exposes all the flaw and creates panic until things get fixed. One of my favorite quotes from Batman fits right in with hackers.” Endure, Master Wayne. Take it. They’ll hate you for it, but that’s the point of Batman, he can be the outcast. He can make the choice that no one else can make, the right choice.” Needless to say, I’m excited for this game not only because it’s going to be a great game, but how hackers are shown will be something I keep my eye on.

  1. Now that I think about it my first impression of hackers was the hackers from the Matrix too! The big dudes sitting behind the computers is still what came to mind when I thought of hackers.

  2. See, I thought of skinny, weedy Neo sitting around in the dark, getting malnutrition from eating only junk food …

  3. To me Neo was the super hacker that transcended the image because he was such a badass hero. All his friends were your typical hackers hidden behind layers of computer parts in that rundown building. This only is shown in the beginning of the movie though.

  4. Looking back, I think that a few years before and after the Matrix, there were a lot of hacker themed movies like Swordfish, Mission Impossible, and a few other ones. But definitely the Matrix did make the hacker as the primary hero.

Also Watch Dogs looks pretty badass and I can’t wait to hit it up on the next gen consoles.
