Hacking Rhetoric

I have heard a little about the organization Anonymous prior to being in this class.  We haven’t gotten to discuss Anonymous in detail yet, but I’ve always been interested in this group because of all that they have accomplished.  I was excited to get to watch a few videos about this organization and its beliefs on issues such as the Church of Google, or better known as Googlism.  I had known that Anonymous started with 4chan by posting images like silly cats and Rickrolls. I’ve always thought those were hilarious! Anonymous then progressed to fighting regimes and trying to revenge against companies who try to cut of WikiLeaks. I felt like they were really trying to make a difference. Anonymous also discussed their negative views of Googlism. They started spreading anti-Googlism all across the country.  Anonymous even posted a video with their “message to Googlism” claiming that their organization should be destroyed.  Anonymous explains all the negative beliefs that associate with the Church of Google.  Right now, I have a positive perception of Anonymous. I am very eager to learn more about this organization and am curious as to how to get involved.

  1. One important thing to keep in mind is that Anonymous is, by definition, not an organization. It’s a moniker, a mask, an identity that any individual can co-opt at any point to serve their needs. While there are certainly some obvious trends and affiliations with most of the actions of anonymous, you could equally well attack charitable organizations and humanitarian groups under the title “Anonymous”. Anonymous is more an idea than a cohesive group — the idea that passionate individuals can affect meaningful change in the digital realm without even a name.

I was excited to get to watch a few videos about this organization and its beliefs on issues such as the Church of Scientology. I had no idea that Anonymous started with 4chan by posting images like silly cats and Rickrolls. Anonymous then progressed to fighting regimes and trying to revenge against companies who try to cut of WikiLeaks. They even hacked onto the Epilepsy Foundation website. Anonymous also discussed their negative views of Scientology starting with the target, Tom Cruise. They started spreading anti-Scientology all across the country. Anonymous even posted a video with their “message to Scientology” claiming that their organization should be destroyed. Anonymous explains all the negative beliefs that associate with the Church of Scientology. Right now, I definitely have a negative perception of Anonymous. However, I am very eager to learn more about this organization!
